Educational Boating
Boating offers hands on learning opportunities whether your mission is education or your group just likes learning.
Boat & Water Safety
Groups of 6 - 15
Safety is always first on our mind and it should be for anyone playing in boats. Learn about throw bags, PFDs, hypothermia prevention, clothing, trip plans, water conditions, river navigation, other types of boats, and basic rescue do's and don'ts.
Custom Field Trip
Groups of 6 - 15
Kayaking on the rivers provides an engaging environment for learning about the geological history of how pittsburgh was formed, the industry that has built our modern city, the ecology of rivers and watersheds, and general topics like physics (how water flows, how the locks work or how different shape boats are propelled).
We work with teachers to create a trip plan that emphasizes their curriculum and can even bring the field trip to you on our Floating Boathouse! Boating is a great supplement to any schools physical education program and the TRRA Junior Teams provide a next step.
Scouting Programs
Our safety and skills oriented instructors combined with a central and peaceful river location in Pittsburgh is a great way to get your troop the experience needed for their canoe merit badge. Link to more info...
Boating Sports
Games and racing are the fastest ways to learn basic boating skills. We can put together an awards ceremony complete with t-shirts, medals and trophies so your group can celebrate their success. Local regattas feature many of the activities listed and are open to teams with limited experience. Boating is a natural team builder, ask how we use boating to teach life skills and group dynamics.
Kayak Football
Groups of 6 - 15
This captivating game will keep your active group occupied for hours. Excellent for beginners and expert boaters alike, each participant has their own kayak and the group is broken into two teams. Teams must work together to get the ball into the end zone or goal. Ask about kayak dodge ball, kayak basketball and kayak polo.
Dragon Boat Racing
Groups of 30 - 60
Stable, easy, intense and fun, dragon boat racing is an instant success. Groups are broken into 2 teams, each team powering a 20 seat dragon boat for warm-up, drills and a mixed bag of fun races.
Indoor Tank and Erg Racing
Groups of 10 - 20
Cold, snowy, raining or have a group that’s not ready for the open water? Get your ERAP experience indoors in our state of the art rowing tanks and rowing machines (ergs). Learn the basics of rowing or paddling, pick team names and let the competitive spirit fly.
Relaxed Boating
Many people have never considered Pittsburgh rivers as relaxing places to be but these wide waterways are great places to unwind after a long days work. Our guides can show you fascinating historic details, wild animals and stunning sunset views.
Dragon Boat Tour
Groups of 12 - 20
Enjoy the scenic river view of Pittsburgh and ease of dragon boating with your whole group in one colorful boat.
Canoe or Kayak Tour
Groups of 6 - 15
Paddle through downtown, around an island, through the Highland Park Dam or any location our floating boathouse can access. All tours include a brief safety and technique lesson for paddling our stable kayaks and are led by knowledgeable guides.
Floating Boathouse
We can come to you! For your convenience, our instructors can bring 20 kayaks and a dragon boat to you via our "Floating Boathouse." We will meet you at any river access point along the Allegheny, Monongahela or Ohio Rivers within five miles of downtown Pittsburgh.
Parties, Events and Conferences
TRRA has two beautiful boathouses located 3 miles from downtown Pittsburgh along the quiet back channel of Washington's Landing. We have rooms ranging from 400 sq ft to 10,000 sq ft with balcony grills, kitchen appliances, great views, connecting bike trails and parks within short walking distance; all in a tasteful boathouse ambiance.
