THREE RIVERS ROWING ASSOCIATION

Youth Summer Camps
2024

Welcome to the 2024 Youth Summer Camp Season!

Welcome to the 2024 Summer Camp Season!  Summer is an incredible time to row in Pittsburgh.  Our rivers allow us the opportunity to work in small boats and pursue individualized training in a way that is not often possible during the school year.  Conditions in the morning are quite frequently well-suited for skill development and technical improvement.

Three Rivers Rowing Association offers several different programs to allow rowers of all skill levels the opportunity to experience summer rowing in Pittsburgh.

Our Summer Programming has changed a bit this year, so please take a look at the new options and contact us if you have any questions.

To discover which camp is right for you, look through the camp descriptions below or contact Matt Grau at mattgrau@threeriversrowing.org.  No experience is necessary, and rowing is open to everyone!

U19 Summer Competitive and Development Rowing

This year we are combining our U19 Competitive Camp and our Technical/Sculling Development Camp into one program.  We will offer four two-week sessions throughout the summer.  Athletes are invited to do as many camps as fit their schedule!  This program is open to junior/high school athletes that are seeking a competitive, highly-technical environment.  Rowers should have one year of competitive rowing experience.  Training and racing will take place in all boat classes, though the camp will take advantage of good weather conditions to particularly focus on time in small boats.  Rowers should be adept at both sweep and sculling, or willing to learn.  Athletes will have the opportunity to race at both the 107th West Side Invitational and the Midwest Summer Sprints (additional information can be found below).  There may be additional scrimmages scheduled.  The coaching staff will come from a variety of local clubs and college programs.

U23/Open Summer Training

Open to college athletes and recent graduates that are seeking significant training access, including rowing equipment and facility access.  Rowers should be adept at both sweep and sculling, or willing to learn.  In order to keep costs down, athletes will receive coaching at the beginning of the summer as they achieve their flip-test and sculling/uncoached sweeping certification.  Following that time, they are welcome to continue training using club equipment with unlimited access.  They will have access to all TRRA fitness facilities and the boat reservation system to train whenever the TRRA facilities are open.  The TRRA facilities include two weight rooms, two erg rooms, and two rowing tanks - as well as a full fleet of rowing equipment.  All athletes who participate in this camp should be prepared to pursue an ambitious training schedule in a competitive environment.  Athletes will have the opportunity to race at both the 110th West Side Invitational and the Midwest Summer Sprint Championship, if they are interested.  The supervising coaching staff will come from a variety of local clubs and college programs. If you have unique work schedules or training considerations, please Contact Us.

Learn to Row
Learn-to-Row Camps (4th-7th Grade | 8th-12th Grade)

Open to any athlete who will be in 4th–12th grade; no experience is necessary.  We have a program for rising 4th through 7th grade athletes as well as a program for rising 8th through 12th grade students.  These camps are open to both experienced and inexperienced athletes.  The focus of these camps is learning and fun.  The coaching staff will divide athletes up by age range and ability level.  Athletes will be taught the proper way to row on the water and indoors and will also learn boat-handling and rowing safety skills.  This program will prepare athletes for a long, successful career in rowing. Some on-land skill instruction and team-building activities will take place.  At the end of this program athletes will be prepared to join a competitive program, row with one of our recreational programs, or wait for the next summer experience!
